"It wasn’t too bad in Birdingham! The view was great, I spent a lot of time with mommy, and, well…”

Careful you don't blow yourself up!

Y-yeah! Okay, you can have your wand back! Just be careful so YOU don’t blow yourself up!

Well, I do use my magic when I take down tornadoes, and I’ve been doing it for a while! I guess I could be quite a force to be reckoned with, if I ever learned how to use a wand properly!

"Yea- I guess that’s another danger Luna didn’t cover- grownups who already have strong magic who can channel it! I think that means you prol’y couldn’t do many spells, since your magic’s already developed and focused with storm magic, but you can focus a lot of omph into the storm spells you can do!"

"Don’t worry, I’ve had training!" Rainbow takes back her wand, "And it does sound like a good idea to wait until you’ve had some more before you mess around with wands! You’ve got a lot of magic, Zephyr!"

zephyrtheopinicus:

Hmm. Okay, let’s throw in a little more magic… *Zephyr focuses intensely. He draws a triangle around his target, and three orbs of magical energy appear, and merge together in front of Zephyr. He then casts the spell normally, drawing across the width of the tree, going diagonally up to it’s highest point, and pointing right at it, with the orb of magical energy at the tip of his wand.

The resulting blast of magic is so intense, it blows Zephyr back a short distance. Several of the glowing teal crescents appear and home in on the tree, and instead of hitting it and dissipating, they pass right through, circle around, and strike again a few more times. The tree is visibly gouged severely.* Whoa! That was really intense!

*A few seconds later, the sound of sighing and breaking wood is heard, as the tree falls apart into several large chunks of wood. Zephyr stands amazed, wide-eyed at what he’s just done.*

"Yikes!" Rainy says.

Princess Luna’s magic lesson: Wands part 2

(Following off Part 1)

Princess Luna clears her throat, and turns the page, to one showing a unicorn’s broken horn, a pony without a horn, and a griffon.

"The first wands were created for unicorns who had broken their horns in ways that could not be healed, allowing them to use their spells despite their injuries.

"Later it was discovered that non-unicorns could use them as well, though rarely. Perhaps one in ten to one in twenty Earth or Pegasus ponies are capable of using a wand for more than the smallest of tricks that they couldn’t perform without it."

The Princess looks up, “This, be assured, is not due to a lack of magic or something that simple- Indeed, Rainbow Feather’s honored mother Rainbow Dash possesses magic reserves surpassing that of the highly magically skilled unicorn, and mother of my goddaughter Midnight, Trixie- however, it is usually the case that the pony’s magic is focused in their own special talents. As a result, while Rainbow Dash’s sonic rainboom produces an amount of magic surpassing all but the most powerful spells, she herself is incapable of casting spells even with a wand.”

"Thus," she continues, "Even out of those capable of using a wand, most find themselves only able to perform one or two spells directly related to their cutie mark, with the number of mages capable of casting many spells a small minority of those, just as it is with unicorns."

"Out of other species," Luna indicates, "Ability to use wands is less common, save in species that tend to have their own magic, but when they do learn, they often have greater flexibility in learning their initial spells than many ponies do, owing perhaps to their lack of cutie mark (not counting those with their own magic that tends to be directed in it’s own fashion). While never carefully tested, it is estimated that perhaps one in twenty five griffons have magic suitable to learning a spell. Great magic potential needed to become a wizard is, once again, similarly even rarer, but does exist."

"Rainbow Feather is unusual in that her magic is clearly pony in nature, and as effectively a high-magic pony without a cutie mark, her magic isn’t focused and is suitable for use with a wand. A crystal wand specifically as it will continue to resonate with her and channel her magic however it grows in the future. My student is an unusual case and thus it is hard to say how she will develop, but combined with her talent for being able to see magic, I am sure she will be able to put her skills to good use no matter how she develops."

"Does any of thou have any questions?"

imageUsually because I end up having to solve a crisis of some kind and it can get pretty stressful at times…especially when there are hostile locals.

"Too bad, I think it’d look nice!"

zephyrtheopinicus:

*Zephyr focused hard, his eyes focused on the tree. He waved the wand horizontally from left to right, diagonally left and up, and straight down, pointing at the tree. Without warning, am arcane looking rune appeared for a split second, and a sharp, crescent shaped wave of wind, illuminated by a teal glow, shot forth, and struck the tree. A definite and somewhat deep mark was left.* Whoa! That was cool… I wonder if I could put more magic into that? If I did, maybe that magic would be more powerful.

But from my perspective, I drew a line across the width of the tree, went diagonally up to it’s highest point, and pointed right at it. It would appear it hit right where I was pointing.

“Yea, that’s really really good for a first try! It really shows you know your magic pretty well already,” Rainy says. “Now, you should be able to do it bigger, but every time you change what you do too much, you’ll have to adjust how your magic goes into the wand or the spell’ll fizzle again. That’s why it takes so much practice!”

zephyrtheopinicus:

*Zephyr focuses his thoughts. He focuses on using his wind magic to leave a mark on a long-dead tree. He waves the wand, channeling his magic into it… And nothing happens.* Hmmm? You sure I can use this? You sure it’s not bound to you, so only you can use it’s magic, or something?

"Yea, I’m sure, it’s just tricky! Try, oh, moving your magic in different ways! I can see you’re close!" Rainy says, focusing her eyes on the Opinicus’s attempt.
